Welcome to Catalpa New Bedford!

New Bedford has a rich maritime history and is famously connected to the Bark Catalpa, a symbol of resilience and adventure. The Catalpa whaling ship is best known for its daring rescue mission in 1876, when it helped free six Irish Fenian prisoners from detention in Western Australia. Captain Anthony, a New Bedford native, played a crucial role in this bold operation. Under his leadership, the Catalpa sailed across treacherous seas, successfully infiltrated the prison, and executed the Fenian rescue, becoming a celebrated story of bravery and international solidarity. This event is also an important part of New Bedford history, highlighting the strong connection between the city’s Irish community and their fight for freedom and justice.
